History, Mission & News

Northern Arizona Blues Alliance's (NAZBA) mission is to promote, teach, and advance Blues, through networking with fans and musicians, entertainment venues, promoters, and music organizations and the community at large throughout the Sedona/Cottonwood/Verde Valley, Flagstaff, and Prescott areas. In addition to special events such as Concerts, Festivals and other Music Themed Events like “Harmonica Blowouts”, “Guitar Shootouts” and just plain having  fun, the organization is a 501 c(3) registered non-profit and an affiliate of the Blues Foundation.

Our affiliation with the Blues Foundation, (Headquartered in Memphis Tennessee with over 200 chapters in 22 countries), enables the organization to host a local International Blues Competition (IBC), where the winners in both the Band and Solo/Duo categories gets to go to Memphis to compete against some of the best Blues Entertainers in the World. NAZBA is also permitted to send a locally produced CD for consideration in the "Best Self-Produced CD" competition. Locally, the organization also hosts smaller scale, single and multi day events, featuring touring national acts, coupled with local talent.

ATTENTION!! Arizona Blues Bands!

The Northern Arizona Blues Alliance (NAZBA) is pleased to announce its
FOURTH annual International Blues BAND and SOLO/DUO Competition to be held on Saturday, October 06 in conjunction with the FIFTH annual CLARKTOBERFEST, in downtown Clarkdale.

The free event is open to the public, spans the street for two blocks of downtown and includes kid events in the park. There will be food from Clarkdale restaurants, many different craft breweries represented along with the three wineries of Clarkdale! Main Street will be loaded with artists, arts & crafts, local businesses and community organizations, plus activities for all ages. Competitors are scheduled to begin 1:00PM sharp and run to 5:00PM, featuring a maximum of 5 band and 5 solo/duo slots for the competition.
Judging will be from a panel of three judges, using Memphis IBC criteria, so again, please become familiar with those criteria. Participants will be provided copies of their scores with judges names redacted so bands can get some idea of their particular strengths and weaknesses after the event.
What do the winners get? First and foremost, the winner of the IBC gets to compete in Memphis, TN at the International Challenge, January 22nd - 26th.

The IBC has become THEE launch pad for many bands and record companies, talent buyers, and promoters will be there. It is an incredible week of music and an experience that is once in a lifetime for many of the participants. NABZA will be providing $1000.00 to help defray travel costs for the band winner and $350 for the solo/duo winner!! Note: winner must go to the IBC to receive funds.

In the event the winner cannot go, the second place band will be the designated replacement. Also, please note, in the event a band member cannot go (for health reasons for example), any replacement or reduction of act personnel must be approved by the NAZBA Board first, and then the Blues Foundation in Memphis – they have the final say on replacements. Therefore, winners must be committed to carry to ball across the finish line!

Guitar Shorty

Join us Friday Sept 28th 7pm at The Orpheum Theater in Flagstaff when The Northern Arizona Blues Alliance presents Blues Great GUITAR SHORTY and THE MOTHER ROAD TRIO.

Guitar Shorty is one of the last living blues legends of his time and has influenced a whole string of guitar slingers including Jimi Hendrix. At age 16 living blues legend Guitar Shorty, aka David Kearney, joined Ray Charles' band. At the age of 17 he recorded with Willie Dixon and moved to New Orleans to play with Guitar Slim.

He then fronted his own group and played with greats like T Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner and Little Richard. At age 19, Guitar Shorty joined Sam Cooke's band. His brother-in-law & friend Jimi Hendrix often watched Shorty play until his untimely death. In addition to touring the globe, Shorty also jams at local L.A. clubs with former members of the Eagles, Steely Dan, and his friend and fan Keb Mo.

Tickets are $15. and are available through the Orpheum Theater Box Office. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Did you know  "Hound Dog" Taylor, Renowned Chicago guitar player was born with six digits on his left hand? Born Theodore Roosevelt Taylor in Nachez, Mississippi on April 12, 1915, Taylor later moved to Chicago and co-founded Alligator Records. When asked what he wanted for his epitaph to be he was quoted as saying "He couldn't play shit but he sure made it sound good!" Ironically while possessing a thumb and five fingers on his left hand, (a guitar players dream) Taylor was famous for playing slide guitar requiring only one finger!
